The £14 Million “Road to Nowhere”: The True Cost of Swansea’s Bendy Buses.
It’s been 17 years since the infamous ‘ftrMetro’ bendy buses first rolled onto our streets. While the purple vehicles are now mostly scrap or in museums, taxpayers and local businesses are still feeling the legacy of this doomed project.
Here is the breakdown of the costs.
£14 MILLION in Public Money: Spent on tearing up city centre roads like The Kingsway and Orchard Street to accommodate the 61ft-long vehicles.
£400,000 PER BUS: Private operator First invested millions into the fleet, only for the service to be scrapped just six years later for being "uneconomic" to run.
Business Loss: Local traders reported a massive drop in footfall during three years of roadworks. Historic institutions like JT Morgan blamed the disruptive road changes for helping push them into administration.
Redesign Costs: After the scheme failed, more taxpayer money had to be spent to redesign The Kingsway again to fix the "counter-intuitive" layout. Beyond the money, the unconventional road layout was cited by inquests as a contributing factor in the tragic deaths of two pedestrians.
Was it a "terrific project" or a "vanity project" that failed the city?
