NIT Rourkela Research Advances High-Performance Nanocomposite for Aircraft Landing Gear! Researchers at the National Institute of Technology Rourkela have developed a lightweight, high-durability aluminium-based nanocomposite designed for aircraft landing gear applications. Engineered using carbon nanotubes, graphite nanoplatelets, and hexagonal boron nitride, the material offers significantly improved load-bearing capacity, thermal stability, and structural integrity. The advanced processing technique ensures uniform particle dispersion and strong bonding, resulting in a dense composite capable of withstanding the extreme stress and wear experienced during aircraft landing and taxiing. Prof. Syed Nasimul Alam (Associate Professor), with his scholar group from the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, including research graduates Dr. Arka Ghosh, Dr. Ashutosh Das and Dr. Pankaj Shrivastava, and researchers Mr. Nityananda Sahoo, Mr. Parth Patel, along with Dr. Velaphi Msomi from the University of South Africa (UNISA), have developed this novel nanocomposite material. The findings of this research have been published in the Materials Letters journal. (sciencedirect.com/science/ar… ) The developed nanocomposite demonstrates around 65% improvement in wear resistance, strength, and lifespan compared to conventional materials, along with enhanced cost-effectiveness.
