Scientists at Purdue University have developed the whitest white paint ever, capable of reflecting 98.1% of sunlight, earning it a Guinness World Record. Made using barium sulfate particles, this ultra-reflective paint can cool surfaces by up to 19°F at night and 8°F during the day, even dropping temperatures below surrounding air levels. Originally reflecting 95.5% of sunlight, the improved version offers significant potential for reducing energy use. Coating buildings with it could cut air conditioning needs by up to 40%, providing a zero-energy cooling solution. If applied to just 1–2% of Earth's surface, it could have a measurable impact on climate change. The research team, led by Professor Xiulin Ruan, has also created a thinner version suitable for vehicles and aerospace use.
