Grant terminations have grabbed the headlines and have seen legal action, but even more damaging to the US research enterprise has been the massive decrease in research grants issued by federal agencies NIH: -57% in the number of awards and -63% in value compared to FY24

I’ve been urged by colleagues to broadcast this loudly @NIHDirector_Jay @RobertKennedyJr 🎤 🇺🇸 📣 📢 ☎️
I hope severe budget cuts to @NIH and @theNCI can be avoided to minimize disruption to research progress and a more reasonable budget is passed. Our community needs to plan for US leadership in biomedical research so breakthroughs can help people here and everywhere. @HHSGov

Dear Elon @elonmusk The real abomination is what has happened to US cancer research funding for 20 years. Happy to share knowledge about that. If America wants to be #1, it won’t happen by defunding cancer research. If you wish to personally fund cancer research, let’s discuss.
With a projected US budget deficit of 1.7 trillion in 2026, why not give @theNCI billions that were not provided over 20 years. Save money from other government waste. Defunding NCI makes no sense and will impact US lives. youtu.be/yUhpJdspPow

Today’s research is tomorrow’s cures for cancer. Glad a RIer is advancing our history of innovation. Dr. El-Deiry’s right, Trump’s @NIH cuts will have dire consequences. His $50 billion cancer research plan and reversing cuts will save millions of lives. politico.com/newsletters/fut…

President Trump and Elon Musk’s funding cuts to groundbreaking medical research do NOT Make America Great. That’s why I’m on the Senate floor introducing a resolution pledging support for NIH & asking for immediate passage. Watch. x.com/i/broadcasts/1lDxLzWgw…

Basic science is inspired by curiosity, accountable to evidence, and subject to peer review. Politics should have no role.

Massive respect for my institution using its platform to lay bare the real impact of NIH indirect cuts. This isn’t just numbers—it’s research, jobs, and innovation on the line. #FundScience #NIHcuts

“This will likely mean fewer new treatments will get to children and therefore that fewer children will be saved,” said Charles Roberts, MD, PhD, director of the St. Jude Comprehensive Cancer Center.

It’s like saying you’re going to save money on a football team by cutting all the linemen.

Last year, $9B of the $35B that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) granted for research was used for administrative overhead, what is known as “indirect costs.” Today, NIH lowered the maximum indirect cost rate research institutions can charge the government to 15%, above what many major foundations allow and much lower than the 60% that some institutions charge the government today. This change will save more than $4B a year effective immediately.

As a PI, most of my lab skills have deteriorated. I barely know how to do anything in the lab, but I'm pretty good at multi-factor authentication, paperwork, electronic signatures... I also tell myself that I'm good at thinking about the big picture, whatever that means.

For the first time, we have adjuvant therapy for clear cell #RCC with survival benefit. 38% decrease in risk of death after nephrectomy if treated w/ pembrolizumab. Congrats to investigators and patients/families. Big day for RCC community. #kidneycancer @VUMC_Cancer @VUMCHemOnc

Important question to @NinaSteele17 @DebVendramini @HCCvPDAC @PitarresiLab for the new pancreas guy writing his first paper from the lab. Is it PDA or PDAC?????????? This might be the most important thing for the paper, right? Seems you all in the field can’t decide lol

This shit has to stop. The punishment for misconduct should be much more severe. This dude just gets to carry on as normal. Fudging data continues to be low risk with high rewards...like a K99. retractionwatch.com/2022/06/…
