@Myk, the last time I checked, you publicly spoke out against FGM yourself. When did opposing violence against women and girls become a political position? When you spoke against FGM in 2022, was it because you were an SLPP supporter, or because you recognised it as a harmful practice that affects the bodies and lives of women and girls? FGM is not an APC issue. It is not an SLPP issue. It is a human rights issue. So please stop. Do tell the First Lady speaking about her stance is not a crime. Like you I opposed FGM and that’s why I signed that letter. Survivors do not carry party cards when they are cut.
That’s your lost ! All the ones protesting are doing it on political grounds.. we can’t keep criticizing bad FGM practices and then promoting same sex marriage. They’re all distinct issues both centered on principles of bodily autonomy, human rights, and individual consent.

Not only has Sierra Leone’s First Lady defended and endorsed those carrying out FGM, she has also dismissed survivors, accusing us of speaking out for money and calling us liars. We speak out because we have lived the consequences of FGM and refuse to stay silent while more girls are harmed. #EndFGM #SurvivorVoicesMatter #NotInMyNameSL

And thank you to @TheAlima from @agirlatatime, mentioned in the piece, who has been highlighting a recent video of the first lady in action - evidence that she is on the wrong side of history!

Indeed, survivor voices were heard loud and clear. For far too long politicians in Sierra Leone and the government of President Bio have simply just ignored us and almost treat us as criminals. As British we must ensure that those who defend or endorsing FGM and any other form of extreme violations against the rights of our women and girls no matter who you are are not given unchallenged platforms while survivors continue to live with the consequences. Thank you to everyone who spoke up, signed, wrote letters, and stood with women and girls. The fight to end FGM continues. #EndFGM #SurvivorVoicesMatter #SierraLeone

Firstlady of Sierra Leone, Fatima Bio has been uninvited from speaking at the Global Power Women Forum at Cambridge. The organisers listened to concerns and made the right call and that is what accountability looks like.

This criminal mutilation of women’s bodies must stop!!!
The pro-FGM First Lady of Sierra Leone is coming to the UK this week. She should be held accountable for supporting a practice that kills women and girls. FGM is abuse, not culture, and we cannot stay silent while it continues. thetimes.com/uk/politics/art…

The First Lady of Sierra Leone Fatima Bio publicly seen here over the weekend defending Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) we all know this has been banned worldwide while receiving international support for programmes on girls’ rights and ending child marriage is deeply alarming. In fact if appears she was mocking those speaking against this awful abuse on the bodies of women and girls. UK taxpayers’ money through development funding must not be used to sanitise or indirectly support political narratives that normalise violence against girls. FGM is not culture when girls suffer lifelong physical and psychological harm. I urge @OAFLAD @FCDOGovUK @GirlsNotBrides international partners to review how funding and partnerships are being used in Sierra Leone and ensure accountability, safeguarding, and consistency on the rights of women and girls. Girls cannot be protected from child marriage while their bodily autonomy is simultaneously violated through FGM. As a campaigner and survivor I would like to bring this matter to the public. Are we now ok with this behavior to a woman heavily funded for programs to end Child Marriage as she claims? @UN_Women @UNFPA @UNICEF @equalitynow @TheGirlGen @OrchidProject @ActionAid @ActionAid @Irish_Aid @amnesty @TheFiveFound @hrw @PlanUK @SafeHands4Girls @TheVavengers @GlobalSpotlight @unfpachief @NimkoAli @MerckFoundation @AU_WGYD @EUatUN @commonwealthsec @DavidLammy @KemiBadenoch @jessphillips @SarahChampionMP @PreetKGillMP @UKParliament @BBCAfrica @SkyNews @AJIunit @cathynewman @lfeatherstone @HelenaKennedyKC @RobertJenrick @jpVAWdata

anyone in the UK media is interested, the First Lady of Sierra Leone is out here promoting FGM. She has been one of the main voices opposing legislation against #FGM and should face serious questions about using her platform to legitimise violence against women and children next time she is in the UK visiting her Council flat.
