A major boost for @isro’s semi-cryogenic engines! IIT Bombay and LPSC have developed Rainbow Schlieren Deflectometry (RSD) a clever optical technique to solve a tough rocket science problem. In these engines, high-temperature gaseous oxygen must completely condense into freezing liquid oxygen before entering the main pump. If any gas pockets remain, the pump can fail. Previously, measuring this rapid heat transfer meant inserting physical probes that disrupted the fluid flow. Now, RSD uses light to visually map these extreme temperature changes instantly without touching the fluid at all. ISRO successfully launches Communication Satellite-03 (#CMS03) aboard Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (#LVM3), nicknamed ‘Bahubali’ – India’s heaviest communication satellite ever at 4,410 kg. With it, India becomes only the 4th nation to launch such a heavy satellite. Moreover, this satellite, built for the #IndianNavy, is India’s most advanced communication satellite to date. It will strengthen the Navy’s space-based communications and maritime domain awareness when India is expanding as a blue-water navy amid high tensions in the Indian Ocean Region. Crucially, ISRO also conducted its first indigenously developed, in-orbit #CryogenicEngine test with this launch. This test, considered groundbreaking, will facilitate launches of heavier and multiple satellites simultaneously, and also benefit @ISRO’s human spaceflight, Gaganyaan and space station initiatives. This 8th consecutive successful launch by #ISRO augments India as a formidable #SpacePower in heavy-lift rocket and space propulsion technology.
