The International Coalition for Human Rights in Congo (CIDHC) has written to the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, as well as to the U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, calling for urgent action to address the ongoing insecurity affecting the Banyamulenge communities living in the highlands of South Kivu. The coalition states that since 2017, these communities have been subjected to repeated attacks targeting civilians, including drone strikes and aerial bombardments allegedly carried out by FARDC and allied armed groups. These attacks have severely impacted the population, destroying farmland, livestock, infrastructure, and homes, while also causing large-scale displacement. In recent weeks and months, CIDHC reports that the attacks have intensified, affecting various areas of Minembwe, Uvira, and Fizi. This has resulted in civilian deaths, injuries, and the displacement of thousands of people. There is also a serious concern that residents are being denied access to markets, healthcare, and humanitarian assistance. The coalition is calling on the international community to establish an independent investigation, ensure the protection of civilians, open humanitarian corridors, and impose sanctions on those suspected of involvement in these acts.
