AN EVENING OF HONOUR, INFLUENCE AND HIGH EXPECTATIONS AS NIGERIA'S ELITE GATHER FOR PROF. ABIODUN ADENIYI On Tuesday, June 9th 2026 evening in Abuja's Maitama district, an influential gathering of political leaders, senior government officials, jurists, academics, business executives and public figures converged at Vanilla Restaurant for a special occasion: the celebration of Professor Abiodun Adeniyi, PhD, following his appointment as the 5th Vice-Chancellor of Baze University. The event, described by many guests as both intimate and distinguished, was hosted by Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi, CON, Chairman of the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP), alongside Hon. Oyetunde Ojo, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA). Together with friends and associates, the two hosts assembled an impressive cross-section of Nigeria's leadership class to honour a man whose academic journey has earned him respect far beyond university walls. Among the dignitaries present was the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, who joined guests in celebrating what many described as a well-deserved appointment. Also in attendance was Prince Ade Omole, respected governance strategist, international ICT executive and public affairs advocate, whose contributions to national development and Diaspora engagement are widely recognised. The evening also drew distinguished guests from across the public and private sectors, including Dr George Agbakahi, Mrs Juliet Agbakahi, and Hon Bertram Okafor, as well as senior professionals and business leaders who have remained active supporters of educational advancement and national development initiatives. Adding further prestige to the occasion was the presence of Rt. Hon. Jokotola Pelumi Kuforiji, former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly and former Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria. His attendance reflected the broad respect Professor Adeniyi commands across political and institutional circles. Members of the judiciary were equally represented. Several serving and retired High Court Justices joined the celebration, lending additional weight to an evening that brought together many of the country's most accomplished minds under one roof. In conversation after conversation, guests spoke of Professor Adeniyi's scholarship, intellectual depth and years of service to academia. Colleagues described him as a bridge-builder. Friends spoke of his humility. Others reflected on his commitment to mentoring younger generations and advancing knowledge in ways that extend beyond the classroom. His appointment as Vice-Chancellor, many argued, comes at a pivotal moment not only for Baze University but for higher education in Nigeria. Expectations are high. So too is confidence in his ability to provide the leadership required to strengthen academic excellence, expand research opportunities and deepen the institution's national and international standing. Throughout the evening, guests exchanged ideas, renewed old friendships and reflected on the role education must continue to play in shaping Nigeria's future. It was a gathering rich in influence and purpose. As the final remarks were delivered and guests began to depart, one sentiment seemed to unite the room. It was a statement of confidence in a scholar, a leader and an institution entering a new chapter. For Professor Abiodun Adeniyi, the evening marked both a celebration of achievement and the beginning of a new responsibility. For those gathered in Abuja, it was a fitting tribute to a man many believe is well prepared for the task ahead. Hon.
