RNA-based Antiviral Strategy Against Plant Viruses: RNA interference / RNA Silencing / Role of MiRNA or SiRNA in Cell Defence -
👉Plant viruses cause nearly 40% crop losses globally, costing over $220 billion annually. In India, cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) significantly affects crops like bananas, pumpkins, and cucumbers. Traditional chemical methods are ineffective against viral infections.
👉A new RNA-based antiviral developed by researchers in Germany uses RNA silencing, a natural plant defense. Instead of random dsRNA, scientists designed genetically engineered dsRNA enriched with highly functional siRNA/MiRNA, offering precise and stronger immune activation without genetically modifying the plant. It targets multiple viral genes simultaneously, reducing the risk of resistance.
👉Field Trials showed that this technology promises an environmentally friendly, spray-based solution for real-world farming, aiming to minimize yield losses, reduce pesticide dependence, and promote sustainable agriculture.
