Here is what one NYPD recruit experienced after failing the 1.5-mile run—a requirement they were never told about before entering the Academy, having already completed the State-approved Job Standard Test (JST): • The run was introduced after the Academy began • Recruits were tested every other week, up to ten times • Roughly 50 recruits failed the run during Gun & Shield week • Their names were publicly blacked out in the auditorium • They were excluded from the ceremony, certificates, and photos • Labeled “remedials” in front of peers • Placed in a 30-day limbo with no training plan, no structure, no guidance • Forced to remain visibly segregated inside the Academy • Told they could not graduate—and initially not permitted to resign All while being physically exhausted and emotionally worn down. This is not “standards.” This is administrative coercion wrapped in tradition.
