The U.S. is considering normalizing relations with Eritrea & lifting sanctions.
At the same time, an American citizen, Ciham Ali, remains one of the longest unresolved disappearance cases involving a U.S. national.
Ciham was born in Los Angeles. She was 15 years old when she was unlawfully detained in Eritrea in 2012. More than a decade later, there has been no public accounting of her whereabouts or condition.
It is critical to build good diplomatic relations on a solid foundation of trust, & knowing the fate of the American teenager who disappeared into a prison system to never be seen again is a start.
Any discussion of improved U.S.–Eritrea relations should begin with a simple question:

Norway has already acted against Eritrean regime supporters who falsely claimed asylum while backing the same dictatorship they said they fled. Now Israel is moving in the same direction.The principle is clear: refugee protection is for victims of repression, not for agents or supporters of repression. But any action must follow the law, with real evidence not assumptions based only on an Eritrean national flag.
Supporting Eritrea as a country is not the same as supporting the PFDJ dictatorship.
The real test must be: did the person support, organize for, threaten, intimidate, or collaborate with the Eritrean regime?
Justice must protect genuine refugees and expose those who abuse asylum systems while serving the dictatorship.
