This day, three years ago, 5000punekars walked together with their families and friends to oppose the three mindless infra projects set to destroy
#VetalTekdi permanently. Their demands were simple-
- *declare
#Tekdi as Natural Heritage Site*
- *declare it as ‘No Development/No Construction Zone’*
- *scrap the projects from Pune’s
#DevelopmentPlan.*
The projects, I repeat, are
1. Balbharti-PaudPhata partially elevated road
2. High Capacity Mass Transit Route (an elevated internal highway across the dense city)
3. twin tunnels (sutardara-Gokhalenagar-Panchvati).
Since then, Supreme Court has validated the environmental importance of
#VetalTekdi and brought the
#BBPP rd project under mandatory
#EIA;
#HCMTR had already been brought under mandatory
#EIA in 2020. We have also made several representations to Pune Forest Division to declare the portion of tekdi as ‘Deemed Forest’ as per SC orders of 2025.
#VetalTekdi holds one of the five most important urban aquifers system that feeds the groundwater table of the city. Rich in biodiversity it is an essential environmental legacy that Pune must preserve and protect at all cost.
